Description

Device of the Società tipografica bolognese on t.p. (female allegory of Bologna). The 2nd emblem is Bocchi's port. (A3v). Mortimer notes that Giulio Bonasone's engravings after Prospero Fontana and Parmigianino are repeated from the 1st ed. of 1555 except for no. 36 which is a copy. Agostino Carracci may have engraved no. 1, which in the 1555 ed. is a woodcut; he retouched the others, the occurrence of first and second states varying from copy to copy. One historiated initial, †2r

An extra leaf is bound before A1 in Getty copy (the missing final blank?). Mounted on it is a copy of the leaf from the 1st ed. that bears the woodcut version of emblem 1, with text beginning "LECTORI STVDIOSO" showing through from the other side (leaf trimmed to 151 x 88 mm.)

Getty copy has the hand corrections on C4r, E2r and E4 noted by Mortimer, but those on 2A1r and 2S3r have been printed correctly

Signatures: † b-f A-2Y

List of authors, †3r-4v
